Be Prepared for Power Outages: Lessons from the Recent Outages

Power Restored to Over 1,100 Homes in Scarborough

Over 1,100 families in Scarborough face no electricity on the morning of February 1, 2025, due to an unforeseen power outage. According to Toronto Hydro, the two affected areas were located along Midland Avenue, between Finch Avenue East and Sheppard Avenue East in the Agincourt neighborhood.

The outage, which began just before 9:00 a.m., left residents without power for over two hours, with electricity restored around 11:30 a.m. The cause of the outage is not known, but it definitely shows the need to prepare for winter power losses.

How Can You Stay Prepared for Outages?

Power outages, whether caused by weather conditions, technical failures, or other unforeseen events, can happen at any time. Scarborough’s recent outage serves as a reminder that having a reliable backup power solution can make a significant difference in maintaining safety, normal life and functionality during these disruptions.

All areas in Canada experience occasional power outages — these are often caused by extreme weather, like high winds and freezing rain damaging power lines and equipment. During heat waves and cold snaps, the electric power system can also become overloaded, leading to temporary disruptions. (Source: Canadian Red Cross)
